NAME: Lt. Hank Anderson
CANON: Detroit: Become Human (VIDEO GAME)
CANON POINT: BATTLE FOR DETROIT, just as Connor is about to awaken the androids at Cyberlife. Hank is brought there by a duplicate Connor unit, having been deceived.
AGE: 53

HISTORY: Wiki Link

PAST GAME MEMORIES: N/A

PERSONALITY: Early in life, Hank was a man's man, and a cop's cop: skilled, courageous, highly regarded as an officer and a man by all that knew him. He put his faith in the law and the law did not fail him. He was a devoted family man, a happy father, and had a promising future ahead of him. He was the epitome of the American dream in all facets of his life...until the death of his son.

For all appearances, since that terrible day, Hank has been a changed man. Gruff and ill tempered, he's become incredibly, overtly cynical with no faith in humanity. He's confrontational, has a low opinion of androids, as well as individuals who act without compassion or feeling, and even associates freely with those on the wrong side of the law he once held so dear. He's also fallen into despair, turning to alcohol to numb his pain and struggling daily against suicidal tendencies.

Beneath this tarnished veneer, however, shades of the man he used to be are still visible. While he's been written up repeatedly and disciplined for his actions on the job, he is still a good cop at his core--his faith in the law has shifted to a deeper faith in people despite all appearances. Hank is jaded, but wants to believe they're still good: he enforces the law selectively, leaving people alone if they're doing no harm. This deeper faith in humans is spurred on by his hatred of the androids he blames for killing his son, Cole.

And despite the fact he no longer enforces the letter of the law, his clean cut roots still show up from time to time--he's more than a little embarrassed when he has to rent sex robots on the job, and struggles with the need to "let them down gently" when he rejects their attempts to engage him in intimacy.

Once an idealist in his youth, shades of that unflagging faith translate into his perception of androids even through the veil of grief-induced hatred. Despite his impatience with his robotic partner and androids as a whole, he constantly berates Connor for exhibiting machine like behaviors, encouraging his flirtation with deviancy in his own gruff fashion, treating him with slightly more patience when he behaves more like a human. Faced with a pair of Traci sex droids that have gone deviant and fallen in love, Hank treats them as he treats everyone regardless of the trouble it gets him in: the blue-haired Traci killed in self defense, and all she wants is to be with the woman she loves.

It is through this faith that he gradually starts to heal, thanks to his developing relationship with Connor. Watching a machine slowly grow into humanity, Hank starts to struggle each time he witnesses Connor die, reminded of losing his son when he watches what he can't help but see as a new life being ended again and again. His perception of Connor becomes decidedly paternal, a fact with which the seeds of salvation are planted in him when he comes to accept the reality of Cole's death: the machine may have operated, but the human it replaced was just as culpable for not being ready to do his job.

Human beings take their autonomy, their very existence for granted. Androids do not--and in playing his part with the battle for Detroit, participating in the emancipation of a brand new race, Hank starts to reconnect with the man he used to be, and in the deviants discovers something that makes life worth living again: hope.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Bog standard human, nothing to take away. :P

SAMPLES:

Is Hank flirting with a medium? He might be flirting with a medium.

Hank and Connor are reunited.

ANYTHING ELSE? Don't let Hank near the booze. Connor will probably cry.
